Porcelain is a decorative and conversational piece in the home. It’s been well documented over the centuries that the French had a fascination with Chinese porcelain. Many kings had crates full of silverware and dishes sent from China. In Samur castle, you can find several display cases full of decorative Chinese porcelain.
French-made porcelain has deep business connections in Limoges. I had the rare and fun opportunity to visit my first porcelain shop in Limoges, France in June 2017. The shopkeeper told my husband and I that every week, there’s a truck full of porcelain sent out on its journey to the UK for sales.
The history is interesting too. I read online that Limoges is knownfor producing porcelain since the 17th century. The city discovered a similar material which is also found in China. That material is called kaolinite and it’s a clay mineral used in Chinese porcelain.
The prices are really a good deal. We bought a standard tarte dish for 20 euros. The brand is Porceliane de Limoges M.P. Samie. The store we bought it from is Porcelaines Thomas and are from the region Limousine, which is now part of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Among the items to choose from are sugar dishes, candy dishes, tea cups (lots of them!), vases, plates and bowl sets, tarte dishes, casserole dishes, and other baking dishes. If you’re traveling and don’t have room in the suitcase for these fine materials, don’t worry. Porcelaines Thomas can ship internationally.
I love how each dish is handcrafted and handled with great care. They also make great gift items for someone special.
If you’re on the road in Limoges be sure to stop by. You will not be disappointed in your visit!
